Flea Market Selling Tips

Everything you need to know about selling at flea markets — from setting up your booth to pricing, attracting customers and making more money every weekend.

💰
Pricing
Price 25-40% below retail. Use round numbers. Have a "make an offer" attitude on big items.
🕑
Arrive Early
Get there 1-2 hours before opening. Early birds get the best spots and motivated customers.
💳
Take Card Payments
Get a Square reader. Vendors who accept cards sell 20-30% more than cash-only sellers.
👁
Display at Eye Level
Use tiered shelving and tables. Items on the ground get overlooked. Hang what you can.
Weather Prep
Bring a 10x10 canopy, weights, waterproof covers and sunscreen. Weather kills unprepared sellers.
💬
Know Your Stuff
Research your items on eBay sold listings before you go. Buyers respect knowledgeable sellers.
📦
Bundle Deals
"3 for $10" moves slow inventory fast. Buyers love a deal and you clear more stock.
📱
Social Media
Post photos of your inventory the night before on Facebook Marketplace and Instagram.
📋
Keep Records
Track what sells and what doesn't. Double down on what works, drop what doesn't.

How much does it cost to rent a booth? +
Most flea markets charge $20-$80 per day for an outdoor spot. Indoor spaces typically run $50-$150. Premium corner spots and covered spaces cost more. Many markets offer monthly rates for regular vendors.
Do I need a sales tax permit? +
In most US states, yes — if you sell regularly you need a sales tax permit. One-time sellers at occasional markets may be exempt. Check your specific state's requirements as rules vary widely.
What should I bring to sell at a flea market? +
Essentials: folding tables, 10x10 EZ-Up canopy with weights, table covers, price tags, a cash box with change, bags for customers, a chair, water, sunscreen and snacks. A Square reader for card payments is strongly recommended.
What time should I arrive to set up? +
Most markets open at 7-9 AM. Arrive 1-2 hours early to get a good spot, set up your display and be ready when serious buyers arrive. The first hour is often the busiest.
How should I price my items? +
Research eBay sold listings for comparable items first. Then price 20-30% below that for cash-and-carry market sales. Use whole numbers ($5, $10, $25). Always leave room to negotiate — buyers expect it.
Can I sell food at a flea market? +
Yes, but food vendors usually need a separate permit from your local health department. Contact the market manager first as many markets have restrictions on food sales or dedicated food vendor areas.
What's the best way to display my items? +
Use height — tiered shelving, pegboards and hanging items draw eyes. Put your best items at the front. Price everything clearly. Group similar items together. Keep your space neat and easy to browse.
How do I attract more customers to my booth? +
A clean, well-organized display is the biggest factor. Use signage. Smile and greet people. Don't sit behind your table — stand beside it. Offer bundle deals. Post your booth number on social media the day before.
